Bruichladdich (pronounced Brook-laddy) Distillery was built in 1881 on the famous Islay island off the Southwest coast of Scotland.  It was built as a state of the art distillery, using gravity and an efficient layout. Unfortunately, through a century of war, the distillery changing hands, and bad luck, Bruichladdich closed in 1994.  Then in 2000, it was brought back to life and refurbished, yet without modern computers and utilizing the original machinery and stills. Today, they produce whisky with exclusively Scottish barley, and some bottlings with 100% Islay barley, naming specific farms and fields when applicable.  Their main Bruichladdich line is unpeated, while the Port Charlotte bottlings are heavily peated, a homage to the now-closed Port Charlotte distillery two miles down the coast. Also, Bruichladdich creates The Botanist Gin, named for the two local botanists who collect the 22 locally picked, wild Islay botanicals.  Finally, the Bruichladdich is committed to the island and its economy. The distillery is the largest private employer on the island with 60 jobs, credited with creating an island-based management and administrative system, and the only commercially scaled bottling hall.
