Women Winemakers Part 1
- On March 4, 2016
We are featuring women winemakers this month and are featuring some of our favorites in each blog post. Here are the first three and their wines!
Cá Lojera Lugana: Ambra Tiraboschi
Ambra and Franco, her husband, are the owners/winemakers of Cá Lojera e Lugan right near Lake Garda in Northern Italy. It is told, that once upon a time when Lake Garda and the smaller Frassine Lake where connected by channels, black market merchants arrived on their boats from the north and used the houses along the water for hiding their smuggled merchandise, and some people swear that wolves did protect those hideaways. The estate is therefore called the house of the wolves. Ambra is one of the most welcoming and gentle people but make no mistake she is incredibly fierce and passionate about making these great white wines from the local Turbiana (Trebbiano di Lugana) grape and it shows in the finished product.
Ca’ Lojera Lugana $17.99/Sale $16.19 (100% Turbiana)
Ca’ Lojera Lugana Reserva del Lupo $28.99/Sale $26.09 (100% Turbiana)
Occhipinti: Arianna Occhipinti
Arrianna is considered to be one of the foremost winemakers changing the face of Sicilian wine and she is a seminal figure for a new generation of wine lovers. She practices organic viticulture, hand harvests, native yeasts for fermentation, and natural wine-making practices using the indigenous grape varietals of the Island like the Frappato and Nero d’Avola in this wine which is fruity, fresh and clean, with a touch of earth and spice. Arrianna is a winemaker to watch and whenever you find her wines you don’t want to miss out on them. They are all relatively small production and highly sought after.
